The difference between pressure washing and power washing is heat - and why most Springfield, MO homes need neither one at full pressure.
The only real difference is water temperature: power washing uses heated water and pressure washing uses unheated water. The pumps, hoses, and nozzles are otherwise the same. For the vast majority of Springfield homes the honest answer is that you want neither one at full pressure - siding, roofs, and painted trim are cleaned with a low-pressure soft wash, and heat only earns its cost on greasy concrete.
Heat, and nothing else. A power washer runs an in-line burner that brings the water up to roughly 150 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit before it leaves the wand. A pressure washer sprays whatever temperature comes out of the spigot. Both machines push water through a pump at similar force - a consumer unit sits around 1,300 to 2,800 PSI and a contractor rig runs 3,000 to 4,000 PSI. Hot water breaks down oil, grease and gum faster than cold, which is why it belongs on a restaurant pad and not on your house. In everyday advertising the two words get used interchangeably, so what is on the truck matters more than the word on the sign.
Neither at full pressure. What darkens siding here is organic - algae and mildew fed by Ozark humidity and the deep shade under the Rountree and Phelps Grove oaks - and organic growth is killed by chemistry, not force. A soft wash applies a cleaning solution at roughly 100 to 500 PSI, about the pressure of a garden hose, lets it dwell for several minutes, then rinses. Aiming 3,000 PSI at vinyl instead drives water up behind the panels and can strip chalky paint off older Springfield woodwork, and because it only knocks the surface growth loose the green is back within a season. On flat, hard, greasy surfaces. A contractor who answers "3,000 PSI on the house" is going to damage something. The answer you want is a low-pressure detergent application on siding and roofs, with higher pressure and a surface cleaner reserved for flatwork like drives and sidewalks. A crew that quotes power washing for every surface on the property is selling a word rather than a method.
Does power washing cost more than pressure washing? When heat is genuinely used, yes - a hot-water rig costs more to buy and burns fuel on every job, which is why it is mostly a commercial tool. For a typical Springfield home the quote should not change either way, because your siding is getting soft washed regardless of which word the company advertises.
Can power washing damage my house? Hot water at high pressure absolutely can. It softens paint, swells wood, forces water past siding seams, and strips granules off shingles. The damage comes from pressure and heat aimed at a surface that cannot take them, not from the label on the service.
Which one do I ask for when I call? Neither by name. Describe the surface - vinyl siding, a shaded north-facing roof, a stained concrete drive - and ask what pressure and what solution they will use on it. A good answer is specific to the surface, and a vague one tells you plenty.
